Samples taken from fuel tanks of an SAA Airbus A330-300 when it returned to Johannesburg after possibly loading contaminated jet fuel in Accra, Ghana in April last year revealed"very high levels of microbiological contamination".
A visual inspection of the inside of the fuel tanks after draining showed"visible signs of a brown sedimentary deposit", which turned out to be"microbiological matter". Fuel filters removed and investigated also contained this. These are some of the findings of an Aviation Safety Report from SAA, dated 26 May 2022, and seen by News24. The report formed part of documents provided by the Department of Public Enterprises on 20 January 2023 in response to questions posed by Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts in November 2022.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
