David Jonsson and Tom Blyth are two of the biggest rising stars in cinema. In the new prison drama Wasteman, they're locked up together, and sparks are going to fly. Collider is proud to exclusively present the first trailer and poster for Wasteman, which will be released in theaters nationwide on April 17.
In the trailer, Jonsson plays Taylor, a prison cook who's already served 13 years of his sentence. He's got a lot to live for: he's getting close to being released on good behavior, and he has a son on the outside who he hasn't seen since the boy was an infant. It might be hard to maintain that good behavior when he meets his new cellmate, Dee . Dee's a drug dealer, and an ambitious one; he wants to control the prison's illicit trade, much to the consternation of resident drug lords Gaz and Paul . It soon becomes clear that Dee has nothing to lose, which makes him a danger to everyone...but will Taylor, who has everything to lose, be even more dangerous? When Wasteman made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, Collider's Perri Nemiroff was on the scene to interview Jonsson and Blyth. Jonsson called it"a brutal story, but also really delicate," identifying it as a"really human" story about rehabilitation and hope. Blyth called the script"a challenge, from an acting perspective," but also noted that it had something to say as"a commentary on the UK justice system," and the justice system as a whole, and"how broken it is." Wasteman was directed by Cal McMau; it is his first feature film. The script was penned by Hunter Andrews and Eoin Doran. Producers on the film include stars David Jonsson, Tom Blyth, Alex Hassell, and Corin Silva, as well as Sophia Gibber, Myles Payne, and Paul Hilton.
