“So I took my favorite fabrics, my favorite yarns, my favorite silhouettes, and the important people in my life and [started from there],” shares designer Veronica De Piante on her new collection
’s debut collection that is a perfect reflection of the designer herself: It is a double-breasted duchesse-silk style with two flap pockets and a third one on the left side of the chest. Then emerging from underneath the lapel is a wide band with intricate black-on-black beading in a minimalist pattern, created by artisans working from a refugee camp in Jordan.
“Initially I had thought, I’m gonna take that beautiful embroidery from Jordan, and I will make, I don’t know, beach cover-ups and blouses,” she said at a preview appointment inside the expansive West Village town house she shares with her husband, children, and two lovable dogs. De Piante had initially started toying with the idea of launching a label three years ago.
De Piante’s own point of view has been influenced by a global upbringing. “I grew up in the Middle East, in Bahrain. My mother was from Argentina, my father’s Italian, so I have a very strong pull towards Argentina,” she says. After university in England, she took a job in media sales. “I lived literally out of a suitcase for 10 months of a year,” the designer recalls. “Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Lebanon—literally all over the world.
