The cancellation came after three people died falling through the ice on Lake Champlain, including two brothers who fell through hours before the event was called off, according to the Vermont State Police.
The first fisherman
Wayne Alexander, 62, of Grand Isle, died on Thursday after falling through the ice while fishing near Grand Isle, troopers wrote inHis body was found in the water hours after he had been expected to return home, troopers said. Alexander was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.Then, early Saturday morning, troopers reported, two brothers died after their utility vehicle broke through the ice in South Hero, located in the south region of Grand Isle.
Emergency crews had received a report at around 7:10 a.m. that a vehicle had fallen through the ice with two people inside, state police said. John Fleury, 71, of Williamstown, was pulled from the water, but was pronounced dead at a hospital. His brother, Wayne Fleury, 88, of East Montpelier, was found at a later time in the vehicle by a rescue diver. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.In a Facebook post Saturday,ice thickness on local lakes and ponds is highly variable due to “well above normal temperatures” in the region over the past two months.
