Verizon customers who were part of a $100 million class-action settlement received much lower payments than anticipated.
Some Verizon customers anticipated receiving up to $100 as part of a $100 million class-action settlement. However, payments distributed in early January were considerably lower, with some recipients reporting amounts under $5. The settlement stemmed from allegations that Verizon charged certain account holders a 'monthly administrative charge' or 'telco recovery charge,' which was deemed 'unfair and not adequately disclosed.
' Verizon maintained that the charge was clearly identified and described during the sales process, marketing materials, contracts, and billing statements. They asserted that the charge helped recover certain regulatory compliance and network-related costs, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and clear disclosure of all consumer charges and fees. Eligible customers, identified by Verizon, received notifications by mail or email. This group included all current and former individual account holders charged the fee between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023. Claims were due by April 15, 2024, with the settlement deemed effective on September 20, 2024. Payments were anticipated to begin distribution in January 2025. The settlement website initially projected payments of $100, with eligible claimants receiving a minimum of $15 plus $1 for each month they were charged the fee. Some users confirmed receiving automatic payments via Zelle or Venmo. However, the actual amounts were significantly lower than expected, with one user reporting a payment of $5.33. The website also stated that final amounts might vary depending on the claimant's length of Verizon subscription and the number of valid claims filed
