María Corina Machado urges Venezuelans to take to the streets and protest against President Nicolás Maduro, claiming he will not leave power willingly. The call to action comes ahead of the next presidential term and amidst the government's pursuit of retired diplomat Edmundo González, who claims to have won last year's election.
Venezuela n opposition leader María Corina Machado urged her supporters to take to the streets and protest on Sunday, stating in a video that President Nicolás Maduro would not relinquish power on his own, so “we have to make him leave.” Machado called on her followers to protest on Thursday, a day before the next presidential term begins in Venezuela .
Her message came hours after the government reaffirmed its intention to detain retired diplomat Edmundo González, who claims to have defeated Maduro in last year's election. “Maduro won't leave on his own, we have to make him leave with the force of a people who never give up,” Machado said in a video posted on social media. “Come out, shout fight. It's time to stand firm and make them understand that this is where it ends. That's it.” Machado, who has been hiding for months in an undisclosed location to avoid arrest, told her supporters “I'm with you.” Hours earlier, National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez, without mentioning González by name, said the unicameral body would order the immediate arrest of the retired diplomat if he set foot in Venezuela. The threat follows the recent government announcement of a $100,000 reward for information on González's whereabouts and comes less than a week before the next presidential term in Venezuela begins. González left Venezuela to exile in Spain in September after a judge issued an arrest warrant against him in connection with an electoral investigation. In recent weeks, he has promised to travel to Venezuela to assume the presidency, which by law should begin on January 10, but has not explained how he plans to return or wrest power from Maduro, whose party controls all institutions and the military
