Much of the world finds it hard to believe, but Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro is claiming victory yet again in what critics call a sham election.

Venezuela ’s President Nicolás Maduro said he asked the country’s Supreme Court to conduct an audit of the presidential election, after the opposition disputed his claim to have won and amid international calls to release detailed vote counts.

Machado said the vote tallies the opposition has obtained show González received roughly 6.2 million votes compared with 2.7 million for Maduro. That is widely different from the electoral council’s report that Maduro received 5.1 million votes, against more than 4.4 million for González. Venezuela has the world’s largest proven crude reserves and once boasted Latin America’s most advanced economy, but it entered into free fall after Maduro took the helm in 2013. Plummeting oil prices, widespread shortages and hyperinflation that soared past 130,000% led to social unrest and mass emigration.

The Carter Center, an independent U.S.-based institution that evaluates elections, said late Tuesday it was unable to verify the results of Venezuela’s presidential election, blaming authorities for a “complete lack of transparency” in declaring Maduro the winner without providing any individual polling tallies.
