CLEVELAND, Ohio - Firefighters now have a new vehicle fire simulator that is safer for firefighters and the environment.
“Vehicle fires are intense and dirty,” said Chief of Training Tom Schloemer. “The plastic or synthetic interior and fuel create hot, toxic smoke which is harmful to both firefighters and the environment. This new training prop allows us to prepare for and practice fighting vehicle fires with less risk for firefighters and less air pollution.”“It really shows us what it’s like.
Yako graduates from the Cleveland Fire Training Academy in August. His class is the first to use these simulators. “Training our firefighters in car fires is a dirty dangerous time consuming process. There are so many things that have to be done to a car before you can light it on fire for training purposes. Very time-consuming. When you burn a car it produces so many pollutants. Black smoke with nasty chemicals and all of that goes into our atmosphere. We wanted to stop that,” said Schloemer.
