A Las Vegas man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for mailing fentanyl to a Park City, Utah , teen who nearly died after consuming the drugs, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.in November 2023 to distributing a controlled substance that resulted in serious bodily injury. His plea came after charges in 2016 stemming from the overdose deaths of two Park City boys.

"DEA agents discovered the victim overdosed on blue M30 fentanyl pills, which were purchased from Shapard," according to a statement from the DOJ.Investigators began looking into Shapard in 2021 after a separate Park City resident was found with illegal drugs and told authorities had obtained them from Shapard on the dark web. The resident also said Shapard had supplied a dangerous synthetic opioid to two 13-year-old middle school students who died in 2016.

In 2021, investigators seized two shipments of counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl that Shapard mailed from Las Vegas to Utah. Customs officials also seized several illicit drug shipments addressed to Shapard from the Netherlands. Undercover DEA agents purchased drugs from Shapard in 2022. Prosecutors said Shapard falsely claimed the pills were legitimate pharmaceuticals that he tested to ensure they didn't contain fentanyl.
