“Politicians at all levels, along with some police officers, members of the public, and media outlets have voiced repeated concerns about public safety, “prolific offenders,” and random acts of violence,” wrote Juk. “Then when the pandemic hit, we saw significant decreases in large volume crimes like residential break and enters because many people were working from home, and a large decrease in theft from auto because people weren’t driving their cars into downtowns to work.”

“We’ve all seen the stories about the increases in racist graffiti, businesses having their windows smashed repeatedly. “ I wouldn’t be surprised if many of you who walk in our downtowns have been victims of aggressive and threatening behaviour, but didn’t report it unless you were actually assaulted,” said LePard, also a former chief of the Lower Mainland Transit Police.“It’s great news that crime overall is generally down in Canada, although I expect that it will trend up again as the pandemic winds down.
