Women in Africa must reinvent the table, not just take a seat at it, and help to create solutions for communities, cities, countries and the virtual world.

Vatiswa GilivaneWith the rapidly increasing demand for digital tech skills globally, advanced knowledge and acumen in digital technology is becoming a necessity to operate competitively.

By increasing the representation of women in institutions creating solutions to Africa’s biggest problems, companies must help bridge the multilayered divide that exists in who gets to influence the economy and those who get to benefit from it. We foresee a near future in which women will lead the projects that create solutions for communities, cities, countries and the virtual world. They will be at the forefront of Africa’s trajectory into the fourth industrial revolution.

By providing women with more opportunities to achieve excellence in driving the global economy forward, we are creating more diverse and innovative workspaces where technology can be taken to new heights in solving Africa’s problems, and women should be at the helm of this revolution.

Nigeria's 7.3 Million Young Girls, Women Undernourished - ReportNigeria's 7.3 Million Young Girls, Women Undernourished - ReportA new global report by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised the alarm on the need to invest in essential nutrition programmes for adolescent girls and women as the number of Nigerian undernourished teenage girls and women of reproductive age soar to 7.3 million in three years. The report - Undernourished and Overlooked: A Global Nutrition Crisis in Adolescent Girls and Women - issued ahead of International Women's Day - warns that the ongoing crises, aggravated by unending gender inequality, are deepening a nutrition crisis among adolescent girls and women that had already shown little improvement in the last two decades. It placed Nigeria among the 12 hardest hit countries by the global food and nutrition crisis. The other countries, includes Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen, represent the epicenter of a global nutrition crisis that has been increased by recent impacts of COVID-19 and exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and ongoing drought, conflict, and instability in some countries. The report calls for governments, development and humanitarian partners and donors, civil society organizations and development actors to transform food, health, and social protection systems for adolescent girls and women.

Radical Shift Needed on Bringing Women's Input on Peace, SecurityRadical Shift Needed on Bringing Women's Input on Peace, SecurityNew goals and effective plans for women's involvement in peacebuilding are needed before it is too late, Sima Sami Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women has said. Bahous was speaking during a United Nations Council meeting to reaffirm the importance of Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security, adopted in October 2000, and to take stock of implementation since it turned 20 nearly three years ago. The meeting was chaired by Mozambique, which holds the rotating Security Council presidency this month. Bahous acknowledged the strides made towards achieving gender equality in the first two decades since the resolution was taken but said "we have neither significantly changed the composition of peace tables, nor the impunity enjoyed by those who commit atrocities against women and girls." Bineta Diop of the African Union Commission also addressed the Council, highlighting its work in getting countries to accelerate the implementation of the resolution saying this is being done through a strategy focused on advocacy and accountability, and in building a network of women leaders on the continent. There are currently more than 100 armed conflicts raging around the world, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The organization sees the daily brutal impacts of armed conflict on women and girls which include sexual violence, displacement, and deaths during childbirth because they lack access to care.
