Pope Francis has ordered the dissolution of the Catholic lay group Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV) following a Vatican investigation that uncovered widespread sexual, financial and spiritual abuses. The investigation, led by Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu, confirmed allegations of abuse by the group's founder and other top members. The SCV, founded in 1971 as a conservative Catholic movement, had faced mounting criticism for years.

The Vatican has not responded to several requests for comment. Dissolution, or suppression, of a pontifically recognized religious movement is a major undertaking for a pope, all the more so for a Jesuit pope given the Jesuit religious order was itself suppressed in the 1700s.
