Sister Simona Brambilla, an Italian nun, becomes the first woman to lead a major Vatican office, serving as prefect of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
Pope Francis made history on Monday by appointing Sister Simona Brambilla, an Italian nun, as the first woman to lead a major Vatican office. She will serve as prefect of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, a crucial department overseeing all religious orders within the Catholic Church. While women have held No. 2 positions in some Vatican offices, this is the first time a woman has been appointed prefect of a dicastery.
To address the theological implications, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, a Salesian, was named as co-leader, or “pro-prefect,” to assist Brambilla. Brambilla, 59, previously served as the No. 2 in the religious orders department. This appointment highlights Pope Francis' commitment to increasing women's leadership roles in the Church
