You’ve probably come across the popular and funny Vannie Kaap Facebook page. If not, then raak wys! There’s a movement brewing in Cape Town and its mission is to take ownership and spread the political and social importance of a language and culture that many have tried to undermine and disrespect. It’s called, exists to celebrate Cape coloured culture and educate everyone about it.
Marc Jacobs, co-owner of the brand, tells #Trending he and his business partner, who is the founder of Vannie Kaap, both grew up on the Cape Flats, him in Athlone and the latter in Manenberg. “The founder [he prefers to stay anonymous] who is a self-taught graphic designer, started it as a hobby on a borrowed laptop. He wanted to see how far he could grow the social media page focused on Manenberg. “When he realised that people connected with what he was posting, he decided to take it further by designing and posting more of his own memes. From here it expanded to the point where it focused on other areas in the Cape Flats and then eventually the whole of Cape Town.
The success of the Facebook page led to the launch of its Woodstock store in December 2017 and, because of the subsequent success of the flagship store, it is getting ready to launch a second store soon. So what’s the message it wants to share about what it means to be Vannie Kaap? “That Kaap’s culture is Cape Town culture. That Cape Town is not just a city, it’s literally a lifestyle. Kaap is that lifestyle, Kaap is that identity that unites us. Kaap is vibrant, humorous, colourful, rooted in a rich history, inclusive and yet also unique. To say you’re Vannie Kaap is to say you’re from the place where South Africa gets its heartbeat. You’re from the Mother City … the city where it all began.
