It was the second debate between the two candidates, who are vying to replace retiring Sen. Rob Portman, a relatively moderate Republican., Portman's name was favorably invoked by both men. But so were plenty of others — Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, Sen. Chuck Schumer and, of course, former president Donald Trump — with each candidate invoking the more radical elements of his opponent's political party in an effort to burnish his own centrist credentials.
Ryan, a Democrat, has been in the House of Representatives for 20 years, during which time he has generally voted according to the dictates of party leadership. But an early attempt by Vance to tie Ryan to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led to a sharp rebuke from the 49-year old congressman.
