Some residents of the upper Rio Grande Valley felt the ground shake and heard a large boom Wednesday after what officials said was a meteorite that fell west of McAllen.

The flash in the atmosphere was bright enough for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites to detect it, the government forecaster said. The NWS tweeted an image from the Geostationary Lighting Mapper, which measures lightning observed from space. The GLM detected a signal around 5:23 p.m. with no storms around it.

A spokeswoman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory did not return requests for comment. The Federal Aviation Administration referred comments to NOAA, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.that late Wednesday afternoon, the Mission Police Department was inundated with calls reporting a loud explosion that shook houses, Chief Cesar Torres said.
