Rob Gilster and other coaches and contributors will be honored Oct. 26 at the 23rd annual Legends Coaching Banquet in Coronado
The San Diego High School Coaching Legends Selection Committee has announced its selections for 2023 and it’s a loaded field, headed by former Valley Center High School coach Rob Gilster, the third-winningest football coach in county history.
Gilster coached for 34 years at Orange Glen and Valley Center, winning 243 games, third in the county behind Herb Meyer and John Carroll . Gilster won eight league championships and five San Diego Section CIF titles.• Gene Alim, who coached football at Sweetwater, Easstlake and Otay Ranch, finishing with 146 wins over 19 seasons.• Kent Houston, who coached swimming and water polo for 25 years at Valhalla, winning eight CIF championships.
• Pat Connolly, who coached boys and girls track and cross country at West Hills and Steele Canyon for 34 seasons, winning five CIF championships.
