The San Antonio refiner landed at No. 23 as energy companies dominated Fortune magazine’s latest annual ranking. More were HQ'd in Texas than any other state.

Valero Energy Corp. landed at No. 23 in Fortune magazine’s new ranking of the nation’s 100 fastest-growing companies. The San Antonio refiner was the city’s only showing on the list, which includes 26 Texas companies — the most from any state. California ranked second as the home to eight headquarters of companies on the list. Tesla Inc. , the Austin -based manufacturer of electric vehicles and batteries, dropped to 42nd from No. 2 a year ago.

All of the companies on the list trade on a U.S. stock exchange, report their data in U.S. dollars, and file SEC quarterly reports. While energy companies overall had the largest presence, the top company was in the transportation sector. London-based TORM, which owns and operates tankers for transporting refined oil products and chemicals, was No. 1. Pennsylvania-based Consol Energy Inc. was No. 2. California-based e.l.f Beauty Inc. and Super Micro Computer Inc. were No. 3 and No.
