New York City voters hoping to switch political parties before the upcoming primary elections must register with their new party by February 14th. This deadline is particularly significant for the mayoral race, as registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 6-to-1 in the city, and the winner of the June 24th Democratic primary has a high chance of winning the general election. Candidates are urging voters to register, regardless of their political affiliation, to influence the outcome of the primaries.

Voters who want to change parties before New York City’s upcoming primary elections need to register to the party of their choice by Friday, Feb. 14.

In a cheeky nod to the Valentine’s Day deadline, mayoral candidate Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani made a video for social media, complete with a love song and a heart-shaped chocolate box containing a voter registration form, asking: “Will you be my Democrat?” “People should register as Democrats who are actual Democrats, especially given how sharp the party divisions and definitions are nowadays,” former Mayor Bill de Blasio told Gothamist.

This time four years ago, Yang was polling in first place among the 2021 Democratic mayoral candidates, pitching voters his revised take on universal basic income. He finished fourth in the primary and changed his party affiliation to unaffiliated in October of the same year. Those “blank” voters, combined with approximately 135,000 voters registered to minor parties, cannot participate in Democratic or Republican primaries — leaving a large potential voting bloc untapped.

Gruber argues that non-affiliated voters are just as dedicated to their independence as affiliated members are to their parties, and that taxpayer-funded elections should not leave voters on the sidelines. But he acknowledged that changes in city and state law would be needed to bring those non-affiliated voters into the process.
