Valencia takes advantage of six turnovers in key Foothill League football battle.
VALENCIA – Valencia and West Ranch came into Friday night’s game tied at the top of the Foothill League football standings. Valencia’s defense put on a show forcing six turnovers and helping lead the Vikings to a 42-14 victory over reigning league champs West Ranch.
The Valencia defense was able to get off to a fast start when Isaac Shin caught an interception on West Ranch’s first drive and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. Valencia’s defense forced turnovers on West Ranch’s first five possessions of the game to set up the offense in prime field position for most of the first half.
The final two Valencia touchdowns of the first quarter came on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Askins to Brian Bonner and a 4-yard touchdown run from backup quarterback Brady Bretthauer. The Vikings took a 35-7 lead into halftime after Cardenas blocked a kick for Valencia that Nick Seymour returned 66 yards for a touchdown. West Ranch’s lone score of the first half came on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Liam McDaniel to Liam Wyre.
