On the first day of the trial, RepValDemings wasted no words summing up the case against Donald Trump: “No president in history has ever done anything like this.'
What makes Val Demings, one of the Democratic impeachment managers charged with making the case against President Trump, so impressive? In what has been two solid days of intense speechifying on the Senate floor so far—with more to come today—Demings stands out for her plainspoken eloquence; her direct, down-to-earth manner; her quiet insistence that the president be held accountable.
She is currently serving her second term in Congress, representing Florida’s 10th Congressional District in the House. Demings first came to national attention last July, when Robert Mueller testified before congress. Many questioners seemed to dance around the subject, but Demings came right to the point.
Demings never seems fearful of speaking truth to power. In December, after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared that he was in lockstep with the White House on impeachment, Demings. “The moment Senator McConnell takes the oath of impartiality required by the Constitution, he will be in violation of that oath,” she said at the time. “He has effectively promised to let President Trump manage his own impeachment trial. The senator must withdraw.
Two more things: Demings rides a Harley. And she rocks a mean strand of pearls. All the more reason to keep an eye—and an ear—on her as the trial continues.
