Vacaville Police K-9 Officer Murph underwent a leg amputation late Wednesday night after being shot during a police operation. The incident occurred as officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of Regency Circle following a series of threats made by Darren Ronald Crail. Crail had initially called 911 threatening harm to himself, prompting police contact. Subsequent calls escalated to threats against the community, leading to a SWAT and crisis negotiator response.
During the operation, when Crail exited his residence armed with a rifle, K-9 Murph attempted to apprehend him. Crail fired at least one round, striking the dog in the leg. Officers immediately transported Murph to the UC Davis emergency veterinary hospital, where the amputation was performed.K-9 Murph, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois, returned to his handler's home on Thursday afternoon and is resting. Lt. Chris Lechuga, the department’s public information officer, stated that this is the first time he can recall a K-9 officer being shot in Vacaville during his 17 years with the department. He praised Murph for his dedicated service and expressed the department's support for both the dog and his handler. Crail was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including harming a police dog, negligent discharge of a firearm, illegal possession of an assault weapon, carrying a loaded handgun not his own, making criminal threats, and resisting arrest. He was also suspected of making annoying calls to 911. Crail sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a local hospital before being booked into Solano County Jail on $58,333 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday afternoon for arraignment.
