A 13-year-old girl who was exposed to COVID-19 during a large outbreak later spread the infection to 11 relatives during a family gathering, the CDC says.

October 14, 2020 -- A 13-year-old girl exposed to COVID-19 during a large outbreak in June who participated in a three-week family gathering spread the infection to 11 relatives in four states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.CDC report,The CDC report supplied further details of the outbreak. Four days after the teen had been exposed during a large COVID-19 outbreak in June, she took a rapid antigen test before her symptoms began and it came back negative.

Of the 14 who stayed in the house together, 12 were found to have COVID-19, either based on PCR testing, antigen testing, positive antibody testing or clinical criteria. One person needed hospitalization, and another had emergency department care for breathing issues. Both recovered. None of the six relatives who stayed outdoors and kept physical distancing developed symptoms. Four had negative PCR tests four days after being exposed; two were not tested.

According to the CDC, children and adolescents ''can serve as the source for COVID-19 outbreaks within families, even when their symptoms are mild” and ''gatherings should be avoided when physical distancing and facemask use are not possible." The case report also highlights that rapid antigen tests have lower sensitivity than RT-PCR tests. The CDC advises that negative antigen tests should be confirmed with RT-PCR tests in those who have had a known exposure.
