Gregory House was just six weeks shy of completing his probationary period at the VA in Salt Lake City when he got the news. "I had to find out I was fired by a press release,” House said. "It was hard, I felt numb. I felt like I was in shock. It felt hard to believe at first. As the last couple of days have gone by, it felt like a betrayal."s on their probationary period were let go. An email was sent to House hours after he left work on Thursday, Feb. 13."I had been sent an email from somebody in HR who I had never met — this person might be local or might be in DC, I couldn't tell you — that says I've been terminated,” he said. "After skimming through the email to see if it was joke, then I noticed a line in there that said due to my performance the agency has decided my employment was no longer in the public's interest."Protests over federal layoffs, Trump administration policies take to DC streets"He rated me outstanding five out of five,” House said as he showed KUTV the review. House is a disabled veteran who served four years in the Navy before returning to Utah to complete his education. He went on to get a Master’s degree before landing his dream job in public affairs at the VA in Salt Lake City in March 2024. After his termination, House even stayed after to get his colleagues up to speed on what he had been working on. KUTV reached out to the Veterans Affairs Chief Human Capital Officer in Washington D.C., where the email originated from, along with the offices of DOGE, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Utah Senators Mike Lee and John Curtis along with our Utah Congressional Representatives. We asked if they were aware of this situation and those like it across the state and if this aligns with the government’s commitment to support and honor military veterans, particularly when it seems to undermine their career prospects after their service. We’ll update this story when we get a response.
