Junior Espinal Calix, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in Alexandria Circuit Court last Thursday and faces up to 10 years in prison. He has been released on bond pending his sentencing, set for Dec. 21.
The Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release Wednesday that Espinal Calix was not offered a plea deal and that “evidence confirmed the accidental nature of the shooting.” His trial had been scheduled to begin next week. Espinal Calix, who had bought a 9mm handgun online, would sometimes “play” with it after removing the ammunition, court records state. That’s, when Espinal Calix, Chavez and another friend gathered at a home in the Lynhaven neighborhood to drink Jack Daniels and smoke pot, according to prosecutors. But the gun still had a round in the chamber that day. When police arrived, they found Chavez with a gunshot wound in his face. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to court records.
