A federal watchdog criticized the Department of Veterans Affairs for long delays in paying veterans millions of dollars in medical co-payment refunds they were rightfully owed. A whistleblower brought the issue to light, prompting a review which confirmed the backlog of over $110 million owed to more than 970,000 veterans from 2012 through 2020. While VA claims to be addressing the issue, the watchdog expressed concern about the lack of a concrete plan of action.

VA reviewed the whistleblower allegations, at the watchdog’s request, and confirmed the existence of the backlog. Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger said VA’s report failed to present a fleshed out plan of action to resolve the issue, and he said he’s working with the whistleblower to resubmit the allegations under the most formal process allowed by law.

“We are working urgently to ensure that all Veterans get the refunds they deserve,” the VA spokesperson said via email. “Any delay is unacceptable, and we will stop at nothing to address this problem as soon as possible.”
