Evidence from supergrass Gary Haggarty a key part of trial, prosecutor says
A North Belfast man accused of murdering two Catholic workmen on a building site in May 1994 was ‘excited, hyperactive and really pleased’ after the double shooting, a court heard today
From Forthriver Link, Smyth has been charged with, and has denied, five charges arising from the fatal incident. Mr Convie, Mr Fox and a third man had been working on a building site in the North Queen Street area and were sitting in Mr Convie’s blue Vauxhall Polo on their lunch break when the gunman opened fire at around 1.10pm.
After exiting the vehicle, the third man observed both Mr Convie and Mr Fox lying on the ground outside the vehicle. He then ran to the site hut and alerted colleagues about what had just happened. Mr Haggarty told police Smyth - who had the nickname Jimmy Shades - was the gunman and he acted on the orders of Mark Haddock.
The supergrass also said that when he met Smyth later that night in a pub, Smyth was ‘exited, hyperactive and really pleased’ and that he said ‘it was a full clip and I emptied it until it stopped firing’.
