Uvalde’s school police chief was supposed to take the oath as a city councilman tomorrow. That’s on hold.

Democratic State Sen. Roland Gutierrez steps forward to address Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as the governor announces a fund to help the families of the Robb Elementary shootings during a press conference in Uvalde on Friday, May 27, 2022. Gutierrez plead to the governor to call a special session to discuss gun reform. Abbott also expressed his outrage after learning the initial details of the shooting was not as accurate as he reported based on information he was provided.

The mayor went on to say that since Arredondo was “duly elected,” nothing in the city charter, state election code or Texas Constitution would prevent him from taking his seat on the council. It just won’t happen on Tuesday.

Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement officers gathered in a hallway inside the school and on the grounds outside, but Arredondo ordered them to stand by and not try to breach the classroom. More than an hour passed before members of a Border Patrol special tactical unit went into the classroom and shot Ramos dead.
