Uvalde school officials won’t say whether Police Chief Pedro ‘Pete’ Arredondo is still on the job

won’t say whether its chief of police, Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, remains on the payroll or whether officials have had any contact with him.said during a news conference Thursday morning at the district’s offices.Lawyer Thomas J. Henry sues Uvalde gunman’s estate on behalf of victims’ families

Harrell declined to provide any information on the status of Arredondo’s employment or on the multiple investigations into the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School. Salvador Ramos, 18, a high school dropout from Uvalde, entered the school through an unlocked door and killed 19 children and two teachers with an assault-style rifle

Arredondo, the on-scene incident commander, has been widely condemned for holding assembled officers back for more than an hour while sporadic gunfire was heard from the conjoined classrooms where Ramos was holed up — even as children in the classrooms called 911, begging to be rescued. Finally, members of a Border Patrol tactical team stormed the classroom and killed Ramos.

Col. Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, has said Arredondo’s decision to await reinforcements and specialized equipment before breaching the classroom was “the wrong decision, period. There’s no excuse for that.” He said officers should have gone in and confronted Ramos “as soon as you can.”
