Both sides of Uvalde mayor’s politics — moderate and fiery — emerge in days after massacre
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin stands as he prays during a vigil held in honor of the lives lost at Robb Elementary the day before at the Uvalde County Fairplex Arena in Uvalde, Texas, on May 25, 2022.
“I can’t get my own senators on the phone,” McLaughlin said. “As an elected official, I cannot get a call back.” At the Wednesday press conference, McLaughlin drew national attention when he angrily confronted Abbott’s general-election challenger, former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke, after the Democrat called out the state’s Republican leaders for failing to address the epidemic of gun violence in Texas.Three times he shouted, “Sir, you are out of line!”
In 2000, father and son launched DKM Enterprises, a business that provides a host of pipe-related services: selling new and used pipe, removing pipelines and doing soil remediation. “I don’t agree with what was said. I’m not an individual that cusses or uses profanity,” Garza said. “But sometimes our emotions get the best of us.
“When you tell me you’re going to do something, you always do it,” Treviño said. “If you say you’re going to make a phone call, you make that phone call.”Over the course of his tenure, however, McLaughlin has become increasingly consumed by anger over the immigration issue. A side effect of that anger has been a frustration with how much aid the U.S. provides to foreign countries, which McLaughlin sees as money better spent on border-security resources.
