Hundreds turned out for rally in Austin on Saturday demanding Gov. Greg Abbott do more in response to the shooting in Uvalde.
Relatives of Irma and Joe Garcia hold up a picture of the couple and class pictures of Robb Elementary fourth-graders, many who lost their lives in the school shooting on May 24, during the Raise Our Voices to Raise the Age March for Our Lives Rally at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022. Irma and another fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles died in the shooting and Irma’s husband Joe died of a heart attack two days later.
That mission on Saturday had him gathering outside Gov. Greg Abbott’s office at the Capitol demanding Abbott call a special session of the Texas Legislature to raise the age to purchase for some weapons from 18 to 21 like Florida, California and New York have done. Abbott, who was not in Austin during the rally, has so far rejected calls for a special session and has not publicly supported raising the age for buying guns in Texas. Instead, his response to Uvalde has been more focused on school safety and mental health initiatives.
“Nothing has changed,” said Maggie Mireles, the sister of Eva Mireles, one of the teachers who died at Robb Elementary.
