Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell Busbee joins Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as he announces a fund to help the families of the Robb Elementary shootings during a press conference in Uvalde on Friday, May 27, 2022. Abbott also expressed outrage after learning the initial details of the shooting was not as accurate as he reported based on information he was provided.

Christina Mitchell Busbee, whose office handles felony prosecutions for Uvalde and Real counties, is heading up a Texas Rangers investigation into the massacre, which left 19 students and two teachers dead. She sought the help of outside counsel to handle the “volume of information” stemming from the inquiry, Turner said Monday.

“There's just such an overwhelming amount of work to be done that she just kind of called in and asked for help,” said Turner, a Democrat who worked as a prosecutor for the Texas Attorney General’s office after a three-decade tenure as the top prosecutor in Brazos County. Also pitching in are district attorneys Tonya Ahlschwede and Audrey Louis, who each oversee rural five-county regions near Uvalde County. Nelson Barnes, a former local prosecutor who coordinates a state border prosecution program under Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star initiative, is helping with the investigation too, Turner said.
