SAN ANTONIO - We're learning more about the 1-year-old boy mauled to death by his babysitter's pit bulls this week in Northeast Bexar County . Just days after the attack, a GoFundMe page has already raised more than $20,000 for the family of Jiryiah Johnson to help them pay for funeral expenses and medical bills.
Bexar County deputies say Jiryiah's 36-year-old babysitter, Heather Rodriguez, left him alone with her 13-year-old daughter Monday morning inside her home on Spruce Ridge Drive. Shortly afterwards, Rodriguez's three pit bulls got loose and attacked the baby. Rodriguez was arrested right after the attack and is now charged with three felonies, one of them a first-degree felony. "Same level that murder would be," said Salazar.
Salazar indicated that Rodriguez's daughter, who was also attacked, did everything she could to save Jiryiah. "She made every effort possible, even lifting that baby up over her head," he explained. "But my understanding is the dog actually climbed onto something and was able to get the baby out of her hands."
