Coach Jeff Traylor is worried about the Roadrunners’ depth amid an array of injuries.

UTSA running back Kevorian Barnes celebrates with his teammates after scoring against North Texas. Barnes, a freshman, could make a bigimpact vs. Troy in the Cure Bowl. When UTSA suited up for last year’s Frisco Bowl against No. 24 San Diego State, the Roadrunners were without 25 players because of a combination of injuries, opt-outs, academics, COVID-19 and the flu.

UTSA lost a group of standouts including safety Rashad Wisdom, wide receiver De’Corian Clark, offensive tackles Makai Hart and Demetris Allen and defensive tackle Brandon Matterson to season-ending injuries, with running back Brenden Brady and tight end Gavin Sharp also going down in the team’s regular-season finale against UTEP.

For many of the 17 players in the traditional senior class, decisions on their status for next season are yet to be announced. Receivers Joshua Cephus and De’Corian Clark as well as cornerback Nicktroy Fortune are among those who have said they plan to return, while standout receiver Zakhari Franklin is among the group yet to make their intentions known.

After carrying a career-high 28 times for 175 yards and a touchdown in the C-USA championship game, league Freshman of the Year Barnes is in line for another heavy workload in the Cure Bowl, barring Smith’s potential return from injury. The Cure Bowl provides one last chance to prove their mettle, and Traylor said Davis, Taylor and tight end Oscar Cardenas are among the group who deserved more than their honorable mentions.
