On Thursday nights, professor Mel Webb and students from the University of Texas at San Antonio sit down with incarcerated individuals, side by side, at the Dominguez State Jail on San Antonio ’s Southwest Side . Nerves settle when Webb starts the class, called the Philosophy and Literature Circle . And then everyone becomes an educator, co-learner and scholar, engaging in critical and passionate exchanges. They read short stories by Langston Hughes , dialogue by Plato and Martin Luther King Jr.
’s communication team that he didn’t know what to expect at the first class. As everyone started learning about the circle and sharing stories, they built relationships, he said. “Just being a part of a program in college inspired me to want to learn more, to move forward,” Gutierrez said. “And I got more involved in the classes. It’s been an experience that I’m never going to forget.” Another participant, John W. Kinney Jr.
academic administrators heard about Webb’s idea and decided such a class would be consistent with the university’s mission. Jill Fleuriet, vice provost for honors education, helped Webb launch the program. In the spring, Webb teaches “Moral Imagination and U.S. Incarceration.” In the fall, it’s “Peace and Justice,” which requires taking part in the circle.
