UTSA preparing for ‘goliath’ matchup against rival North Texas
Receiver Zakhari Franklin and UTSA are seeking to avenge last year’s 22-point loss to North Texas in Denton. He knows the Roadrunners preach treating each opponent and every day the same, but the heightened stakes of this weekend are hard to deny.
“We’re fired up. I cannot wait for Saturday,” Baty said. “I could barely sleep last night, thinking about it. I was fired up at practice, ready to get in and work.” “We let the rivalries be decided by the fans, but they don’t like us, and we don’t like them,” Haynes said. “It’s just that simple.” UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said the 3-0 C-USA records are enough to drive home the significance of Saturday’s game without the need to lean into any revenge factor.
“Nobody forgets last year’s matchup, but it’s a different element,” Haynes said. “Honestly, I think we needed that loss. I don’t think we win the conference championship without it. That loss, it made it very real for our team that we can be beat, and we hadn’t faced much adversity at that point.”
