Dixie Electric Cooperative confirms one of their crews was installing a utility pole on County Road 24 when they hit a water main.

More than 1,400 residents remain without water in Macon County after officials say a water pump failed at the South Macon Well.Dixie Electric Cooperative confirms one of their crews was installing a utility pole on County Road 24 Wednesday when they hit a water main. Macon County Emergency Management Agency Director Frank Lee said this has caused a new water outage near the Little Texas and Brownsville areas. The water authority estimates around 1,200 people are affected.

A Dixie Electric representative said their normal protocol is to call ahead and get a team to locate any water or electrical wires before they dig. The company says they did this, but the water main was not marked, so they hit it. Dixie says when they hit the water line, they alerted the water system and remained on site to help repair the line.Crews estimate the water should be back on by Thursday. In the meantime, two truckloads of water are being distributed to residents at a storm shelter on County Road 69.

This week’s previous outage stemmed from a faulty pump at the South Macon Well. Lee said that pump is back online. The water authority has taken water samples to a lab in Auburn for testing. For now, water may be turned on, but there is still a boil-water advisory in effect until the test results come back.
