The Utah Utes used three pitchers, a five-run first inning and huge plays by freshman Karlie Davison to outlast Southern Illinois.

Utah's softball team celebrates a win over Southern Illinois in the NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 19, 2023.After just two innings, it looked like the Utes softball team would run away with the first game of the NCAA Tournament and maybe even get to go home early due to the mercy rule.

But Southern Illinois gave the Utes all they could handle. The Salukis cut their deficit to just one run in the top of the third. When the Utes put up three unanswered runs, the Salukis countered with four runs at the top of the sixth and tied the game. But the Utes answered yet again. Freshman shortstop Karlie Davison doubled to left center field and brought home two runs in the bottom of the sixth. It was the final answer Utah needed to secure the 11-9 win over Southern Illinois on Friday in its first game of the NCAA Tournament’s Salt Lake City Regional.Davison hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. She finished the day 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored.
