Utah ns may be expecting big changes to their bills soon as at the same time the state's largest electricity provider is proposing a rate hike, a major gas company said it's doing an almost identical price drop.
“We’re required to open up our financial books show where we’ve spent our money and where we plan to spend our money," said Rocky Mountain Power spokesperson David Eskelsen. RMP has requested a rate change that would take the current residential customer rate of 10.96 cents per kilowatt hour and increase it to 14.31 cents by 2026, a difference of 30.5%.“This request is too high," Parker said. "It's really unprecedented."“The proposed rate increase from Rocky Mountain Power would be laughable if it wasn’t so dangerous. The proposal is completely unacceptable.
As an example, RMP officials said that their insurance costs for 2023 are 18 times more expensive than in 2019.General costs for buying fuel and running the grid have also increased. “We are looking at placing a lot of those distribution lines underground. That’s a very expensive enterprise, and that’s why it hasn’t been done until now," Eskelsen said.
They acknowledged that with different energy policies among Utah, Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho and Wyoming, it can get complicated to determine how to spread out costs appropriately.
