The remains of a Utah soldier who died in a Philippine prisoner of war camp during World War II arrived at Salt Lake City International Airport on Tuesday

Ballard King Yeates, who passed away on July 29, 1942, at the Cabanatuan POW Camp after surviving the Bataan Death March, was returned to his family with full military escort. Family members were asked to be at the airport's cargo area by 3:00 p.m. to receive his remains, which arrived on American Airlines flight 1456 from Dallas at 4:03 p.m. after two delays.

Utah-native Yeates enlisted in the Army in March 1941 and was training for the Signal Corps. He was an accomplished flutist and played in band and orchestra, winning honors for solos. The Yeates family will hold a memorial service on Saturday at White Pine Funeral Home in Logan, Utah, followed by a graveside service at the Millville Cemetery under the direction of the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Yeates will be laid to rest next to his parents and family.

The DPAA, operating out of Hawaii, has been working to identify unknown soldiers from the Cabanatuan camp for at least 75 years.
