SANDY — Soccer fans across Utah marked the beginning of the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup on Thursday with celebrations and community watch parties, even though Salt Lake City is not among the tournament's host cities.
At the plaza outside America First Field in Sandy, crowds gathered for one of several free watch parties scheduled throughout June. A majority of fans cheered Team Mexico onto victory against South Africa. Organizers invited fans to bring blankets, hats and team gear to watch matches on a large outdoor screen.
The event also featured food and drinks for purchase, along with games on the field and a bounce house for children, creating a festival-like atmosphere for fans of all ages. Attendees said events like this are rare in Utah and reflect the growing popularity of soccer in the region.
"Having the beginning of the World Cup right here in Sandy, having America First Field hosting it, I just think it's something that you will usually not see," said Andres Valadez, who moved to Sandy from Mexico in 2016. "It makes me feel really happy. I love the U.S., I love Mexico; I think it's a healthy blend of both cultures.
" Organizers said the Sandy gathering is the first of several watch parties planned that RSL will host. The U.S. men's national team is scheduled to play Friday at 7 p.m. Gates open one hour prior to kickoff.
