A Utah Senate committee voted to advance a bill that would prohibit students from using cell phones or smartwatches in the classroom. The bill, SB178, sponsored by Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, would also allow school districts to make exceptions to that policy or impose even stricter requirements on technology use. The statewide standard under the bill would be a ban on phones, smartwatches, and other devices during class time, but they would still be allowed during lunch, recess, and between classes.
