The Utah State Board of Education is set to study the correlation between standardized tests administered to young students to assess their reading and comprehe
nsion skills.
The state periodically undertakes such studies to ensure the continued relevance and accuracy of its educational benchmarks aiming to refine, if necessary, the state's approach to early literacy assessment. The study by the State School Board aims to determine whether the reading comprehension and basic literacy tests given in the first and second grades are accurate predictors of third-grade performance.
"It is important to us because we want to be really transparent with our parent community, students, and teachers about the value of the information they receive from each of these assessments," Nielsen said.
