William traveled to Salt Lake City from Lincoln Children's Zoo in Lincoln, Nebraska, shortly after Hogle Zoo transitioned from caring for Himalayan red pandas to Chinese red pandas. This decision was made in collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as part of their Red Panda Species Survival Plan.
Zoo caretakers describe William as "cautiously curious" and eager to explore his new home in the Asian Highlands habitat. His favorite activities include training, learning new behaviors, and snacking on fruit and bamboo.William's arrival follows the departure of MowMow, a Himalayan red panda, who left the Hogle Zoo on a breeding recommendation.
Red pandas are native to China, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. They belong to the family Ailuridae and are classified into two species: Ailurus fulgens fulgens, Himalayan red pandas, and Ailurus fulgens styani, Chinese red pandas. Both species are considered endangered due to habitat loss, degradation, and poaching, with the red panda population estimated to have declined by 40% over the past two decades.
