The makeshift storefront featuring 10,000 VHS and DVDs brought 'nostalgia' to 'hundreds' of conventiongoers.

On the far end of the FanX Salt Lake vendor floor, a makeshift storefront draws curious conventiongoers as they walk by, some digging through bins filled to the brim with clamshell VHS tapes and DVDs.

This is the first time the traveling store, specifically made for conventions and large events, has visited Utah, its physical location making a final stand in Bend, Ore. Since 2018, the Oregon location has been the last operating Blockbuster store in the United States. “Having people come tell me their stories, being able to remember through their eyes what it was like in the ‘90s, really makes me remember why I’m doing this every day,” said Harding, who recently celebrated 20 years with the company.

Parts of the traveling store bring Jeremy back to working at Blockbuster, he said as he handles the pop-up’s $5 movie transactions. But he’s also noticed the store experience has changed to people visiting for nostalgic reasons. Jeniece Tygesen and her cousin, Christian Hansen, dressed in the vests marking them as “temporary Blockbuster employees,” took a selfie in front of the store’s picture station, the space surrounded by “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Lethal Weapon” movie posters. FanX visitors since 2015, they said “curiosity” made them come to the shop.
