Utah Attorney General Derek Brown said BYU and Utah deserve honest competition and that he and Gov. Spencer Cox stand behind the Big 12's right to enforce its rules in response to what he described as Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's "egregious and admitted misconduct.

" In a June 15 letter to Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark and Chairman Douglas Girod, the state leaders weighed in on the dispute involving Sorsby and the Big 12's authority to punish schools over sports gambling-related conduct. Brown and Cox expressed support for the conference and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond in their dispute with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The two argued that the Big 12 has the legal authority to enforce its rules after Paxton challenged the conference's authority to penalize Texas Tech in connection with the Sorsby case.

"The Big 12 Conference is a private association that adopts and enforces its own rules, and every member institution — including Texas Tech — has voluntarily and contractually agreed to abide by those rules," the letter states. "Every athlete in this conference who competes honestly — who does not bet on the games he or she plays or have any involvement — has a direct interest in the conference enforcing rules that protect the integrity of its competitions.

Texas Tech's conduct undermines that interest for every one of them.
