A Midvale, Utah, man was sentenced for a wire fraud case he committed while awaiting trial for a separate wire fraud case.
by Matthew Jacobson, KUTVA Midvale, Utah, man on Monday was sentenced to 41 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for wire fraud and contempt of court committed while on pretrial release for a separate securities fraud case.
According to the 2021 indictment, Sayers, acting as the founder and CEO of Saygus, devised a scheme to defraud investors and obtain money by means of false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises. The indictment alleged that Sayers raised at least $10 million from an estimated 300 investors between 2012 and 2020, promising imminent billion-dollar success with the launch of a revolutionary smartphone.
While awaiting trial on these charges, Sayers violated his pretrial release conditions by sending an email to an individual in the Philippines known for connecting business owners with investors. Sayers sought help in raising $300,000 to $500,000 for a new technology company, SMART'R, which he described as designing and developing advanced mobile devices in the medical, communications, and entertainment industries.
