A bill is moving to the Utah House floor that would allow students to opt out of assignments through "belief accommodation."" received an 8–1 favorable recommendation from the House Education Committee on Wednesday.
If approved, it would be effective on July 1. Representative Michael Peterson brought forward the bill that states any course in higher education must "reasonably accommodate a student's absence from an examination or other academic requirement" for reasons of "the student's religion or conscience" or the student's participation in a religious activity. It states that the institution must ensure the accommodation "does not adversely impact the student's academic opportunities." The student would be required to provide written notice to the instructor of the course. The instructor then would have to "schedule an alternative examination" or "make accommodations for other academic requirements related to the examination."The bill also states the commissioner would annually create a list of religious holidays for two years and distribute it. Students may request accommodation for additional holidays not on the list. The bill states this would help with "avoiding encroachment on a student's sincerely held religious and conscience beliefs" and prevent "undue hardship."Two people were killed after a pick-up truck and a passenger car crashed head-on in Duchesne County.Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol said the vehicles werThe FBI pored over Jeffrey Epstein’s bank records and emails.
