The Utah Hockey Club, formerly known as Utah Hockey Club, will hold a fan vote to determine its official team name before the 2025-26 NHL season. The team initially aimed to use 'Utah Yetis' but faced trademark issues with Yeti Cooler Company, leading them to explore new options.

The Utah Hockey Club will not be proceeding with 'Yeti' or 'Yetis' as its team nickname. Instead, the team will hold an in-arena fan vote to select a new name. The team anticipates announcing a permanent name and identity before the 2025-26 NHL season. Fans attending Utah's next four home games will have the opportunity to vote for three options using tablets located throughout Delta Center. The team estimates that this could involve upwards of 15,000 fans per game.

The current 'Utah Hockey Club' name was intended as a placeholder for its inaugural season in Salt Lake City, following Smith Entertainment Group's purchase of the Arizona Coyotes franchise. Chris Armstrong, the team's president of hockey operations, stated, 'It has always been our intention to let our season one identity as Utah Hockey Club, the team's performance and the amazing response from our fans hold the conversation through our inaugural season.'This new name selection process arose after the Utah Hockey Club submitted 'Utah Yetis' for trademark approval. However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected the application due to a 'likelihood of confusion' for consumers with other companies and brands using the 'Yeti' name, particularly Yeti Cooler Company. The team explored the possibility of a coexistence agreement with Yeti Cooler Company but ultimately decided to move on from the 'Yeti' name. The team acknowledges that the new option, 'Utah Mammoth', is essentially a replacement for 'Utah Yeti'. The name will allow the team to utilize a 'mythical snow creature in the form of a Yeti' as its mascot. In addition to the 'Utah Mammoth' name, fans will vote on two logos: one for the 'Utah Mammoth' and another for either 'Utah Hockey Club' or 'Utah Wasatch', featuring the Yeti-like 'mountain defender' logo.Mike Maughan of Smith Entertainment Group indicated that there could be another fan vote after this one, but emphasized that the fans' decision in these votes will be the name of the Utah team starting next season. The team submitted all 20 names from its initial survey to the USPTO, but encountered the most significant rejection for 'Yeti' or 'Yetis'. While 'Utah Hockey Club' also faced rejection, it is anticipated to have a smoother path to approval in the future. Maughan expressed confidence that the three names in the fan vote should clear the USPTO process. He stated, 'We have an incredible team, and we are very confident we have a clear path to each of those names. We have strategies to approach each of them and feel that we're on very solid ground as we continue forward.
