The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) has launched a campaign to encourage safe travel during the holidays. The campaign, which includes flyers at select bars and restaurants, offers a $10 voucher for Uber rides. The initiative aims to reduce impaired driving fatalities, which have already exceeded last year's numbers.
If you're out at a bar or restaurant this holiday season, you might see a flyer from the Department of Public Safety . It's a part of their campaign to help people get home safely during the holidays. 'I don't want any empty chairs at that dinner table during the holidays, and it can happen in a flash,” said Jason Mettmann with the Utah Highway Safety Office.
Mettmann said that over the last five years, Utah has averaged 400 crashes on Christmas statewide, with about 14 of those being drug or alcohol related.'Last year at this point, we saw 47 impaired driving-related fatalities just due to alcohol,” Mettmann said on Christmas Eve. “This year in 2024, unfortunately, we've exceeded that number and seen more than 50.' DPS wants to see that number go down, so they've started a campaign at select places for those looking to go out for some holiday fun. 'It has a QR code that you can scan right there in the bar or restaurant that will go straight to your Uber account, and it will give you a voucher for $10 off of your ride,” Mettmann said. Mettmann said the money spent for the ride share is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars you'd pay for a DUI, especially because there will be plenty of law enforcement out looking for impaired drivers this holiday season. 'Law enforcement agencies statewide are going to be working over 250 additional shifts just directed at impaired driving,” he said.'These crashes are violent. They end lives,” Mettmann said. The DUI blitz and the campaign will last through New Year, so you have plenty of chances to still have some good, safe holiday fun while still getting home safely
